Stories, Tales and Legends

There are many stories, tales and legends in Virginia. On this page you will find some which I have heard or read about. Please feel free to email me with additional information to add to these stories or send information on others which I may include.

1.       Lost or buried gold at Mt. Rogers.  Wagon train of gold and other items brought out of Mexico were reported buried  somewhere around Mt. Rogers in Southwest Virginia.

2.      Along the New River a local man found a cave and entered it in the mid 1900's.  He became lost and did not get out for several days.  Upon returning home it was said his hair had turned gray from his experience.  He would never talk of what happened in the cave, except to say that you wouldn't believe what he saw.

3.     In the mid '30s, there was a large diamond robbery somewhere around New York.  The robbers were supposed to have been caught around the Blue Ridge area east of Roanoke, VA.  The diamonds were never found or, if found nerer turned over to the authorities.  The story goes that they were buried somewhere between Roanoke and Blue Ridge.

4.     Several hunters were camping at their regular spot near Rocky Mount, Virginia, at an old ruins of a farm house.  They had camped there many times using the old fire place which still functioned.  On this particular night one of the hunters was scraping his knife on a brick from the fire place and noticed a gold glitter.  It turned out that the brick was made of gold which had been camouflaged and placed as part of the fireplace for Safety.

( There are many stories around Virginia of gold, silver and other valuables being buried for safety.  The two main reasons for this was fear of army troops during the War Between the States and, afterwards with the depression, came the fear of banks.  Many of these people either died or forgot where the stash was buried and to this day, it is said that untold dollars are still in the ground around old homesteads.

5.      From Northern Virginia down through central Virginia to Southwest Virginia are a number of areas which were mined for gold.  Some were gold mines and other were streams where color could be found.  Many of these were played out  or were not yielding  enought when the call of gold in California came.  Some of these areas may still offer gold dust for the weekend prospector.

6.     About fifteen years ago, Wythville, Virginia was a hot spot for UFO's.  Newspapers carried stories for several weeks of the almost nightly sightings of strange objects in the skies.  One person who was said to have some good pictures of the events but, when his home was broken into, the pictures were lost.

7.     Central Virginia brings the story of a location where a mountain was leveled on top and a "weather station" was built, and than covered over with dirt and trees replanted.  This was done in the '50s and today you cannot tell which mountain it is.

8.     An artifact was found buried about a foot  and a half underground in Southwest Virginia, near Roanoke.  Is is unlike anything found in the area and is said to be around 3,000 years old. Was it brought here from travelers  from Mexico or is it a sign of an earler civizalization?
